EMD turbochargers
Turbocharger overhaul, parts and field service for EMD 645 and 710 engines — the workhorses of locomotives and river pushboats across the Americas.
A turbocharger that is also a gear-driven blower
The EMD unit is not a conventional turbocharger: at low load it is driven mechanically through a gear train and clutch, and only at higher load does it run freely on exhaust gas. That hybrid design means the overhaul touches parts a normal turbo does not have — planetary gears, clutch, overrunning components — and it is where most independent workshops stop.
- Complete overhaul including gear train and clutch assembly
- Rotor balancing and nozzle ring reconditioning
- Complete parts lists per engine model — rings, bearings, gaskets, gears
- Field service at the depot or on the vessel
- Exchange units to keep the locomotive or pushboat in service
Engines we supply and service
EMD 645
EMD 710
Applications include GM/EMD locomotives (GT, SD and GP families, incl. RENFE 333 and similar) and marine and river installations with 645 and 710 engines.
MODEL NOT LISTED? ASK US.
Complete parts lists, not just the fast movers
- Rotor assemblies, shafts and turbine wheels
- Planetary gears, clutch and drive components
- Bearings, sealing rings and gasket sets
- Nozzle rings, diffusers and housings
- Complete cartridges and exchange units
Send us the engine model and the turbocharger data plate and we return a complete list for the job — not a partial kit that leaves the unit half assembled. For rail fleets we prepare per-model kits so the depot can plan its own overhauls.

Frequently asked questions
What changes in an overhaul because the EMD is gear-driven?
The gear train joins the inspection. Beyond the usual rotor, bearings and clearances, the drive gears, the clutch and their backlash are assessed, because on this design the unit also works as a blower at low load. A turbocharger inspection that ignores the gear train is an incomplete inspection on an EMD.
Do you supply full parts lists or only fast movers?
Full lists. The slow-moving reference is usually the one that stops a locomotive or a vessel, so we catalogue the whole list for the 645 and 710 engines rather than only the parts that turn over quickly.
