RETROFIT MATCHING

Turbocharger retrofit

When the original turbocharger no longer adds up — on cost, on lead time, or because the manufacturer no longer supports it — there is a proven alternative. These are the matchings we install.

WHEN IT PAYS OFF

Four reasons to change turbocharger brand

  • Lead time: units available without waiting on OEM factory lead times
  • Life-cycle cost: cheaper spares and overhauls for the rest of the engine's life
  • Obsolescence: models whose factory support has been reduced or withdrawn
  • Intervals: current designs with longer periods between overhauls

A retrofit is not "fitting a different turbo": it is an engineered replacement. We check the engine's operating point against the proposed turbocharger's compressor map, define the adaptation kit (flanges, water and oil piping, brackets, instrumentation) and document the result like any other job.

MEDIUM-SPEED & RAIL ENGINES

Hedemora matchings

The Hedemora Turbo & Diesel HS range (1.000–4.200 kW per unit, pressure ratio up to 4.5 and up to 24.000 h between overhauls according to the manufacturer) covers medium-speed power and traction engines whose original turbocharger is hard to maintain.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Isn't changing the current turbocharger's spec enough?

Not on your own: the specification is agreed between engine builder and turbo manufacturer after matching tests, and changing it without engineering can end in surging, overspeed or shortened rotor life — and on IMO marine engines it triggers re-certification. That is why a serious retrofit always goes through documented matching.

Does a retrofit affect the engine warranty?

On engines outside the manufacturer's warranty period — the usual case for a retrofit — there is no impact. If the engine is still under warranty, we check before proposing anything.

Is engine performance maintained?

That is the acceptance criterion: the proposed turbocharger must cover the engine's operating point with margin. If the matching doesn't work out, we don't quote the retrofit.

My engine isn't on the list?

The list covers the most requested matchings, not every possible one. Send us the engine and current turbocharger and we'll assess feasibility.

Who supplies spares afterwards?

We do. KBB (as authorised technical service), PBS and Hedemora are part of our regular range, with spares and overhauls in our own workshops.
